Teaching

"I was fortunate to have been taught piano by Erica for several years. Her dedication to sharing her musical talent and developing students is awe-inspiring. Thanks to the positive and nurturing environment she created she not only developed my musical ability but confidence in life, which has led me to pursue my career in the creative and performing arts." Erica has 20 years' experience in teaching piano, flute, saxophone and keyboard. She is currently a Visiting Music Teacher (Piano) at Dean Close Preparatory School in Cheltenham and also teaches at North Worcester Primary Academy. Erica previously taught at Warwick Preparatory School and with Severn Arts. She began her teaching career at Glenmead Primary School, Birmingham and went on to teach with Birmingham Music Service for 15 years. Erica is also in demand as a teacher privately and has taught pupils of all ages and abilities with dedication and passion.
Erica teaches classical, contemporary, pop and jazz styles and believes a fun, flexible approach and a variety of repertoire is essential when learning an instrument. She is a dedicated and patient teacher, always adapting and expanding her teaching skills to suit the individual pupil. Erica encourages composition, improvisation and playing by ear alongside more traditional learning. Erica also regularly composes and arranges music for her pupils.

Erica has considerable experience in preparing pupils for exams with both ABRSM and Trinity, from Initial/Prep Test to Grade 8 and regularly attends training and teacher events. She is available to accompany instrumentalists and singers for exams, with much experience in playing for Trinity and ABRSM.

Erica also runs an after school singing club at her local primary school, providing a fun music group for children and to inspire a love of music.
My whole family, including my wife and I, took lessons with Erica Avery for several years, and we would recommend her very highly. She was very supportive of us all, encouraged creativity, arranged twice-yearly concerts for all her pupils, and shepherded my children through their grade exams while at the same time managing to make the whole process fun. She was always reliable, professional and approachable. We explored a wide repertoire of classical and popular music, and she was always receptive to suggestions, if there were particular pieces we wanted to learn. My daughter is now doing her A-levels at a music school in Manchester, and we owe a great deal of her continued passion for music to Erica's influence. John
